The Germans attacked Stalingrad because they wanted to get the oil fields in the Caucasus region and so they laid siege to the town to make the population starve to death. But when they had captured most parts of the city, they were trapped in the city in Nov. 23, 1942. Between Jan. 31 and Feb. 2., most of the German soldiers gave up. This was the major turning point on the Eastern Front of WWII.
