Andre Maginot, the creator of the idea of the Maginot line said about this in 1929: "We could hardly dream of building a kind of Great Wall of France, which would in any case be far too costly. The French had a really defensive strategy after WWI. They tried to defend themselves against Germany with a huge wall on the boarder of France. The french government spend big parts of the German reparations on this. However, in WWII, the Maginot Line proofed to be useless because it was to inflexible.
